"Workhouse" invokes pictures of Oliver Wind, and of depressing Victorian organizations populated by wrinkled poor people constrained into backbreaking work in return for pitiful slops of porridge. At the philanthropy home we were not anticipated that would pick oakum or break stones, but rather the work was hard and the profits were pitiful.
